In traditional design flooring is usually installed following the direction of the main light source. If you have a width wise open concept run the flooring parallel to the longest walls. Install the second and subsequent planks in each row by locking the ends together and then you work your way down the plank pushing the tongue into the groove as you go. If you re installing your flooring on a main floor you will want to float the floor in the same direction throughout all of the rooms to create a cohesive feel. After all a floor can be flat and have a plane to it. Vinyl plank flooring like laminate or wood flooring needs to have a layout that is pleasing to the eye. The only major rule for installing vinyl plank floors is that the surface needs to be flat.

Generally this is done by working from the most visible wall usually the one that greets the eye as you enter the room then working outward toward the entryway. Level is not necessarily important.
